IBPS PO Prelims 2018 : Memory Based English Questions with Solutions
Direction
In these given questions, two columns I and II and three
sentences are given, which are divided into two parts. The Column I (A, B and C) consists of first
half of each sentence and the Column II
(D, E and F) consists of second half of each sentence. Match the column I with the column II, so that the sentences formed are
both meaningful and grammatically
correct. Choose the correct option as your answer
.
Q.1)
Column I
Column II
A) The Climate change is any significant long-term change
in the expected patterns
D) individual motives or preferences about work.
B) This concept is substantively different from
work-related
E) of the average weather of a region (or the whole
Earth) at a significant period of time.
C) The most suitable soil for the cultivation of
wheat
F) is well drain fertile loamy soil and also clayey soil.

(a)
B-E and C-F
(b)
A-E, B-F and C-D
(c)
A-F and C-D
(d)
B-D
(e)
A-E and C-F

Solution :
 A
and E could have made a pair, but since the preposition “at” is
mentioned in E, the sentence, if made, will be grammatically incorrect. Part A
clearly mentions that climate change is a long-term change, hence the
preposition “over” should be used instead of “at”.

C and F could have made a pair, but “drain” is incorrect in part F.
We need to describe the soil, thus, the adjective “drained” should be
used. “Well” acts as an adverb to modify “drained”.

B and D form a correct pair, thus, option (d) is the correct answer.

Q.2)
Column I
Column
II
A) This is one
of the most popular trekking routes in Darjeeling
D) area and
offers magnificent views of the valleys and mountains on the way
.
B) The Earth’s
magnetic field serves to deflect most of the solar wind, whose charged
particles
E) crops, who
are cultivated on nearly 60 per cent of cropland.
C) The major
impacts of climate change will be on rain-fed or un-irrigated
F) would
otherwise strip away the ozone layer that protect the Earth from harmful
ultraviolet radiation.

(a)    A-D
(b)   A-E and C-F
(c)
C-E

(d)
A-E, B-F and C-D

(e)
C- D and A- F

Solution
A and D make a meaningful
and grammatically correct pair and talk about the popular trekking routes in
Darjeeling. B and F could be linked, but there is a grammatical error in F.
Here in this question the “layer” is a singular subject and “protect” is a
plural verb. Since there is only one ozone layer, “protects” should
be used to agree with it. C and E cannot be paired as “crops” are
things and cannot use the pronoun “who”. Thus, option (a) is the correct answer.
Q.3)
Column
I
Column
II
A) The Banking sector in India has always been
D) the students were divided into two groups.
B) Supposedly on the basis of their preferences for
each painting,

A-E and B-D
(b)
A-F, A-E and B-
D
(c)
B-F
(d)
C- D
(e)
C-D and B-F

Solution
A- E and B- D make correct
pairs. The pair C-F cannot form a correct pair as the future is being talked about and
“been” indicates the past. “Be” should be used to make the
sentence correct inplace of been. So, option (a) is the correct answer.
Q.4)
Column
I
Column
II
A) When you imagine your ideal future, you’re
D) outgroup are seen as caused by stable negative
group characteristics.

(a)
B-F and C-E

(b)
A-D and C-D
(c)
C-D and A-F
(d)
C-E
(e)
B- D

Solution
C- D and A- F make correct
pairs. B- E cannot form a correct pair as “way” starts with a
consonant and the article “an” cannot be used before it. Hence, option (c) is the
correct answer
.
Direction: In
each question, a sentence with four words printed in bold is given. These highlighted words are numbered as (1), (2), (3) and (4). One in every four words printed in
bold may either be misspelt or
inappropriate in the context of the sentence. Find out that highlighted word which is
wrongly spelt or inappropriate, if any. The number of that word is your answer.
If all the words written in bold are correctly spelt and also appropriate in
the context of the sentence, mark (5), ie ‘All
Correct

Entry
(b)
Partnership
(c)
Foreign
(d)

Solution
With the present perfect tense we use the third

Hence, option
(a) is the correct alternative.

(a)
Prime
(b)
Example
(c)
Achieve
(d)
Determine
(e)
All Correct

Solution
‘Determine’ is not
grammatically correct in the given statement, it should be replaced by
‘determined’. Determined is an adjective which means having made a firm
decision and being resolved not to change it, while ‘determine’ is a verb which
means ‘to assess’. Thus, option (d) is the correct answer.

Solution

The word ‘accomplice

should be replaced by ‘accomplish’ which means to achieve, to succeed in doing or
completing something. Hence, option (b) is the correct answer.

.
