16th Oct : World Food Day

World Food Day is being observed every year across the globe on 16 October to mark the foundation date of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in 1945. The day is celebrated widely by many other organizations which are concerned with food security, including World Food Programme and International Fund for Agricultural Development.

  • First “World Food Day” was observed in 1981.
  • Aim of the day is to access sufficient amount of safe and nutritious food inorder to sustain quality food and promote good health.
  • Theme for World Food Day 2018 – “Our actions are our future. A Zero Hunger World by the year 2030 is possible

Some Unknown Facts

  • The unsafe food which contains harmful bacteria, viruses, parasites or chemical substances, causes more than 200 diseases – ranging from diarrhoea to cancers.
  • One in every ten people fall ill every year from eating contaminated food, and 420,000 people die each year as a result. Children under 5 years of age are at particularly high risk, with some 125 000 young children dying from food borne diseases every year.
  • 1/3 of all the food produced worldwide is lost or wasted (which amounts to about 2.6 trillion USD) every year.
